SENATE Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile and Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago should hold their tongues because they are making a fool of themselves with the bitter exchanges of accusations and personal attacks against each other.
These two elder senators should not only restrain themselves because the spirit of Christmas is just around the corner but also, most especially, because they are disgracing the institution of the Senate which has lost public trust and confidence.
In fact, when Senators Enrile and Santiago exchanged verbal tirades against each other, they actually made themselves unworthy of being called “honorable” members of the Philippine Congress.
In her speech last Wednesday, Santiago went ballistic, throwing accusations and calling unsavory names against Enrile whom the nation once hailed for his excellent conduct of the impeachment trial that ousted former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Enrile, not to be outdone, laughed at Santiago’s tirades on him, questioning further the state of mind – or say, insanity – of Santiago who is likewise admired for her feisty remarks on almost all issues she can lay her hand on.
Alright, we were entertained by the exchanges of tirades between two of our eldest senators, but should not we be ashamed too that we voted for these two people who were supposed to help us create opportunities for ourselves so that we will have a better society?
Many good people I know would not want these two senators to get away with it. They are outraged at the arrogant display of disgraceful conduct in full view of the Filipino people.
And it is rightly so because Senators Enrile and Santiago are elected to the August chamber not to entertain the Filipino electorate with their public speaking skills or their political wits.
If each one has solid evidence against each other’s faults, then, for heaven’s sake, let each one bring them in court or in any proper forum. If Santiago, who keeps on bragging she was a former RTC judge, has evidence against Enrile, then let her bring him in court.
But please, spare us all these personal attacks (argumentum ad hominem) and all the incendiary labeling. Calling each other’s names is something we least expect from our honorable men in the Philippine Senate. Only uneducated do that!
In addition, the lady senator made the roll-call among students in the gallery as if to brag that she has the youth support. But honestly, what values are we teaching them?
Perhaps, this should be another reason why we should support calls by some quarters to abolish the Sangguniang Kabataan. Senators Santiago and Enrile should conduct themselves in a more honorable way. Please naman!
