THERE’S no stopping for the Navotas City government and Mayor John Rey Tiangco to find ways that directly benefit its constituents especially those at the poor sector.
Just recently, the mayor sealed a partnership with the Save the Children (International) Foundation in support to the city’s Social Welfare and Development Office’s programs for childhood development, basic education, school health nutrition and adolescent development and child protection and rights as well as disaster risk reduction.
The foundation, we learned, has established at least seven Day Care Centers complete with teaching materials, books and toys as part of its continued support to the city.
ELDERLY GET FREE ANTI-FLU VACCINES
About 1,000 Navotas residents were the first batch of local elderly who became beneficiaries of the anti-flu vaccines given free by the city government as part of its stepped-up health campaign especially for senior citizens, according to Mayor Tiangco.
The local chief executive, who heads the city’s Gender and Development Council, explains that it’s been the primary concern of the local government to take care of the elderly in the city especially those who cannot afford high cost of medicines and hospitalization, among others.
In particular, he says it allocates funds through the council to implement massive anti-flu vaccination for senior citizens.
Late last month, several local street sweepers, aged 50 to 50-years old, got pneumococcal or anti-pneumonia vaccines also given free by the city government.
The effect of the vaccines can last up to five years, says Mayor Tiangco as he hints that more senior citizens will benefit from the specific health program as the city government has set aside sufficient funds to ensure its effective implementation.
Aside from GDC, the city’s Human Resource Department and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office have been constant partners in implementing the programs designed for elderly and underprivileged.
MASSIVE CLEAN-UP AND DENGUE PREVENTION PROGRAM
The Navotas mayor, meanwhile, instructed the concerned local officials to make sure that the massive clean-up and dengue prevention campaign is held on regular basis especially in densely-populated communities.
Over last week, the mayor was all praises for residents and volunteers who showed up along R-10 in North Bay Boulevard south (NBBS) where the campaign was initiated.
He says the success of the every campaign being spearheaded by the local government lies mainly on the all-out support from residents as well as non-government organizations and civic groups. GOOD RIDDANCE/ARLIE CALALO
