THE Quezon City council headed by Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte as its presiding officer will be manned by veteran councilors who worked during the time of former vice mayor and now Mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista.
In an election of officers for the Sangguniang Panlunsod, Fourth District Councilor Jesus “Bong” Suntay emerged again as the majority leader for the now 38-member council with the recent passage of two new districts for the city, the Novaliches and Tandang Sora Districts where six councilors had also been elected and became additional council members.
Suntay will be aided by Councilors Vincent Belmonte (also of Dist. IV) as the First Assistant Majority Leader, Jose Mario “Don” de Leon (Dist. III) as the 2nd and actor-comedian-turned-politician Roderick Paulate as the 3rd Assistant Majority Leader.
The minority leader that almost got a stand-off during the election was cornered by Eufemio “Ping” Lagumbay (Dist. III) who is also a come-backing councilor.
Committee chairmanships have not been completed as the number of council members have increased following the additional two districts, according to Vice Mayor Belmonte.
She assures the city folk that the entire members of the current council under her stewardship will work closely to enable them to enact measures and ordinances especially those that directly benefit the residents and the city as a whole.
“We may differ from one another as we have our own beliefs and choices but we will make sure that we will always stay as one if it is already the interests of our constituents that are at stake,” Vice Mayor Belmonte says.
Elated Mayor Oca
FOR promptly and quickly responding to his call during his inaugural address, Caloocan City Mayor Oscar “Oca” Malapitan has lauded the city council for appropriating some P318 million as additional funds for the establishment of two new multi-level school buildings for the locally-subsidized University of Caloocan City.
The council led by Vice Mayor Maca Asistio approved the ordinance with a supplemental budget totaling P343,744,958.56, “that will be used for the benefit of residents and subject to all laws, auditing rules and procedures.”
Sponsored by newcomer Councilor Anna Karina Teh, the measure will allocate funds that will be sourced from the 10 percent business tax collected from delivery trucks, amusement fees, printing fees and franchise taxes.
“I am commending the City Council for promptly passing this measure and supporting my administration’s thrust to advance the welfare of Caloocan public school students, particularly those studying in UCC,” the visibly-elated Malapitan says.
Aside from proposed two school buildings, the additional funds will also be used to build special laboratory rooms and multi-purpose hall for the university and these are expected to provide a more conducive learning environment for them,” he says.
Councilors Luis Abel, Allen Alexander Aruelo, Tolentino Bagus, Aurora “Onet” Henson Jr., Maryloy Nubla, Roberto Samson, Carmelo Africa III, Dean Asistio, Carolyn Cunanan, Ma. Milagros Mercado and Susana Punzalan supported and signed the fund ordinance.
