THE 2016 Rio Olympics is just around the corner, and our country’s quest for a gold medal remains an elusive dream. Will we succeed this time? It is said that many countries are worried about the Zika virus and how it might infect their delegations.
It is time for us to rally around our athletes and Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Peping Cojuangco. This just might be the year!
What’s in a gold medal, anyway?
Well, the gold represents the best of the best, the crème dela crème, the cream of the crop.
Majority strive to be the best in what they do. We have been programmed from birth to excel and be number one. From parlor games in children’s parties, to Top Ten rankings in class, to being the topnotcher in the bar or board exams.
Perhaps the difference between the achievers and the plodders is the attitude. In Fil-Estate, we were taught then by Joe Guianzon that “what the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve!” This is a very powerful mantra that has changed many lives.
I have a favorite bible verse that I find so empowering, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.
But one very simple yet so encouraging and so endearing battlecry consists only of three words, “Go for gold!”
“Go for gold!” inspires and motivates. It encourages us to do our best, whatever our situation in life – as students, as employees, as athletes. It emboldens us to triumph over adversity.
There are times we are at an emotional quagmire – at our lowest ebb. It is good to be reminded of these power phrases to get us back on the right track.
As the Rio Olympics looms in the distance, let us support our athletes in their quest for the elusive gold medal. Who among our athletes will finally bring home the bacon?
Go for gold, Pilipinas! ABISO/PAUL EDWARD SISON
